In East Texas, the backyard is part of the house for most of the year. But the sun is strong, the mosquitoes are serious, and summer storms roll through fast. The right outdoor build lets you actually use your yard instead of just looking at it.
Our crew has built pool pavilions, screened rooms, covered patios, and decks around Tyler. Here is how to pick the right one for your home.
Option 1: A covered porch or patio cover
A covered porch gives you shade and keeps the rain off. It is open on the sides, so you still get a breeze and a full view of the yard.
Best for: Homes where you want shade over an existing patio or pool deck without closing it in.
Things to think about:
- Roof type. Metal roofing is popular in East Texas. It lasts a long time, sheds pine needles well, and can match your home. Shingles are another option if you want it to blend in with the main roof.
- Posts and footings. Posts need a solid base. We either set footings or pour a concrete slab, depending on the design.
- Fans and lights. Ceiling fans make a big difference in July. Plan the wiring before the ceiling is closed in.
Option 2: A screened porch or screened room
A screened room is our favorite for East Texas. You get shade, airflow, and no bugs. On a recent job, we built a screened pool room with stained wood posts, painted siding on the lower walls, and a metal roof. It turned the backyard into an outdoor living room.
Best for: Families who want to spend evenings outside without fighting mosquitoes.
Things to think about:
- Knee walls. A short solid wall at the bottom protects the screens from pets, kids, and lawn equipment. It also gives you a clean place to run outlets.
- Screen quality. Heavier screen holds up better and lasts longer.
- Floor. Most screened rooms sit on a concrete slab, which is easy to clean and holds up to wet feet coming from the pool.
Option 3: A wood deck
A deck adds usable space, especially on a sloped yard where a slab would be hard to pour. It can be open to the sky or paired with a cover.
Best for: Sloped lots, raised homes, and lake houses around Chandler and Athens.
Things to think about:
- Lumber. Use treated lumber rated for ground contact on posts and framing. It matters in our wet climate.
- Upkeep. Wood decks need to be cleaned and sealed every few years to stay looking good.
- Old decks. If your deck has soft or loose boards, it may be time to rebuild rather than patch.
What about the slab?
Many covered and screened builds start with a concrete slab. We have poured slabs for outdoor builds next to pools, then framed the structure right on top. A good slab is level, slopes slightly to shed water, and is thick enough for the posts.
Questions to ask yourself before you build
Before you call anyone, think through how you will use the space. Your answers shape the whole design.
- When will you use it most? Evenings in summer point toward screens and fans. Cool fall afternoons may only need a roof.
- How many people? A table for four needs far less room than a sectional, grill, and a spot for the kids.
- Where does the sun hit? A west-facing patio bakes in the afternoon. A roof or lower knee wall on that side can make a big difference.
- How will water drain? Roof runoff needs somewhere to go. Gutters and a slight slope on the slab keep water away from your house.
- Does it need power? Fans, lights, a TV, or a mini fridge all need outlets. It is much easier to plan wiring before walls and ceilings go up.
Permits and HOA rules
Some cities and neighborhoods have rules about setbacks, roof height, and attached structures. If you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, check their guidelines early. We are happy to talk through what we have seen in your area during your estimate.
How much does it cost?
Small decks are on the low end. Large screened rooms with a slab, roof, fans, and lighting are on the high end. Most of our porch and deck building projects fall somewhere between. You will get a free, written estimate with your design before anything starts.
Pair it with other upgrades
Outdoor projects often go hand in hand with other work. New exterior doors leading out to the porch make it feel connected to the house. If the area near your back door has water damage, we can handle leak repair at the same time.
